The wines of the Canary Islands were incredibly popular in the UK during the 1400s, with the products of Lanzarote mentioned in some of Shakespeare’s works. In 1730 and disaster struck the island as a series of volcanic eruptions covered the vines in a thick layer of lava. The resilient winemakers soon discovered a method of dry cultivation that is unique to Lanzarote and known as enarenado.

In the black, volcanic landscape each vine is protected from the strong island winds by a dark semi-circular wall of volcanic rocks creating the effect of a crater. This method means that Lanzarote wineries rely on cultivating their crops by hand, which makes the process heavily labour intensive.

The islands avoided the phylloxera plague that decimated European vineyards in the 19th century; the vines are among some of the oldest original vines in Europe.
